Earth is currently experiencing the strongest solar storm which is also called as Geomagnetic Storm. The last occurence of this solar storm was last 2005. This is the result of the massive solar flare that erupted from the sun.
According to wikipedia, A solar flare is a sudden brightening observed over the Sun surface or the solar limb, which is interpreted as a large energy release of up to 6 × 1025 joules of energy (about a sixth of the total energy output of the Sun each second). The flare ejects clouds of electrons, ions, and atoms through the corona into space. These clouds typically reach Earth a day or two after the event. The term is also used to refer to similar phenomena in other stars, where the term stellar flare applies.
This 2012 Solar Storm said to be having minor problems on earth. But still it forces the airlines to re-route, power fluctuations, power grid and navigation devices.
“Operators are surely seeing a greater number of errors on their system that are causing them to work a bit harder, but we’re not expecting satellites to stop,” Douglas Biesecker, a physicist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told ABCNews.com.
Base on the reports, people who are on plane travel at the same time of the storm might possibly exposed to too much radiation but not yet identified if what are its result to the people on the ground. Biesecker confirmed that one of the great things on earth is its magnetic field which will protect us or any living things on earth from too much radiation.
For those who do not know, wikipedia defines earth's magnetic field which is also known as the geomagnetic field as the magnetic field that extends from the Earth's inner core to where it meets the solar wind, a stream of energetic particles emanating from the Sun. It is approximately the field of a magnetic dipole tilted at an angle of 11 degrees with respect to the rotational axis—as if there were a bar magnet placed at that angle at the center of the Earth.
